Knee replacements and thigh strength go hand in hand, hence the need for specialized joint replacement workouts. Check out this article over at Orthopedics This Week by Elizabeth Hofheinz, M.P.H., M.Ed. This article gives an explanation of a study conducted at the University of Iowa which points to the fact that strengthening thighs might even prevent the onset of symptomatic arthritis of the knee. While it didn’t prevent patients from presenting with osteo-arthritis when viewed on x-ray, it did reduce the “symptomatic” arthritis associated with knee pain.

One should not underestimate the value of strong thighs as it relates to strong functional return to daily living following a knee replacement. Remember that the human body has been equipped with an infrastructure of bones, ligaments, tendons and muscles which supports our frame. The underlying joint disease which contributed to your need for a joint replacement has caused considerable damage and has extended from bone out to ligaments, tendons and ultimately muscle. It is now critical to move forward with strengthening those muscles, hence re-building the muscles, tendons and ligaments that serve as the super-structure around your previously diseased bones.

Your surgeon has been blessed with the skills to repair and resurface your diseased joint, now it is your job to see that what he or she has re-created, you do not neglect. Now it comes down to preventative maintenance. We will be going deep into ways in which we can strengthen our musculature in ways that do not further harm your joints and take into account the unique nature of your new “bionic” anatomy!
